The Captains’ vs President’s match that is held on the closing of the green day is always an enjoyable way to end the season, this year it will be an Aussie Triples match.

A great time was had by all those that took part in this year’s Sparks Trophy. The triples contest comprised of each team playing five games of four ends with two points being awarded for a win and one point for a draw. Congratulations to Rita, Sally/Steve and Reg. who won four out of their five games. The cup was presented by Cheryl who represented the Sparks family. All the games were played with a great spirit, and the afternoon was rounded off with a delicious bring and share buffet. A big thank you to Julia and Steve for organising and ensuring that the event ran smoothly. We now look forward to coming together again for our club’s Finals Weekend.
As we approach the end of the bowling season we look forward to our club competitions finals day. Congratulations to all our club members who have made it into the finals and a big thank you to Bryan for organising the competitions throughout the season and on the day.

Derek’s Bench
At around 1pm Derek Lush’s family will present a bench to honour his memory in recognition of the many years of dedication and service that he gave to our club.

Congratulations to our Mini League players who were runners up in the league with 25 points just behind Ilminster who had 30 points. The league consists of five local teams made up of players who are fairly new to the sport. Games took place on Monday evenings throughout the season culminating in a Mini League Cup match at South Petherton which was won by Merriott. Thanks to Simon Shrubb for organising the league and cup matches and to Derek Smith for ensuring that we fielded a team each week.

On Saturday August 1st two ladies teams from our club took part in The Lyme Regis Triples Day Bowling Competition. Twenty teams from across Dorset and Somerset played each other culminating in a knockout competition between the finalist. Although both our teams did well neither of them reached the final. This was played between Portland Borstal and Chardstock with Portland winning to take the prize money. Our ladies said they had a great day of bowls accompanied by a fine meal and good company. They look forward to entering again next year.
On Sunday July 12 we gathered at the club for another great night of music hosted by Reg. He was accommpanied by Sue who sang and played the violin and Matt on the cello. The evening started with Reg and Sue singing a variety of well known songs, it wasn’t long before they invited willing club members to join them. We were treated to such classics as These boots are made for walking, Kingston Town, When I’m sixty four, a parody of the Johnny Cash song Jackson, two very funny poems narrated by Bryan along with numerous other songs in which everyone joined in. Thanks to everybody who came along especially those who were brave enough to step up to the mike. A special thanks to Reg, Sue and Matt for making the evening another special night to remember. The good news is that Reg has kindly offered to do it again later in the year.
Following their match against Watchet where our ladies team won both their home and away matches Rita, Debbie, Lynne and Sally have now been awarded their Hot Shot certificates. They should be very proud of themselves as scoring 8 points in a single end is a very rare occurrence. The ladies team is having a good season so far lying fourth in their league. We wish them well as the season progresses.
